Winter Driving Safety

Some things to think about while driving this winter:

bulletCompletely clear your windows, hood, trunk and roof of snow and ice before driving.
bulletSee and be seen by using your headlights during inclement weather. Keep the headlights and taillights clean for added visibility.
bulletStay back at least four car lengths.
bulletLook out for the sudden slowing of traffic. Plan your own stops by slowing down well in advance.
bulletBrake only when traveling in a straight line. When applying the brakes, do so gently and release just before the brakes lock. Repeat this process. If you have anti-lock brakes, refer to your owner’s manual for braking instructions.

Icy patches are 10 times more slippery than dry pavement at 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, watch out for black ice at intersections, underpasses, shady spots and bridges.
Watch for plow trucks backing out of driveways.
If you must pass a plow truck, use extreme caution.
High snow banks diminish visibility, making other vehicles, pedestrians and children at play difficult to see.
You need to drive slower on winter roads in winter conditions than you would in other seasons. Use the following guidelines:

     WET ROAD - Slow down 5 to 10 m.p.h.

PACKED SNOW - Slow down to half speed.

ICE - Slow to a crawl.
