Heating Safety

bulletSpace heaters need space. Keep all space heaters at least three feet (one meter) away from walls, furniture, and anything else that can burn.
bulletUse only space heaters that carry the label of an independent testing lab.
bulletPortable heaters should be turned off every time you leave the room or go to sleep.
bulletAlways use proper fuel in a heater. Never use gasoline as a fuel in a heater designed for kerosene or oil.
bulletNever use or store propane gas tanks inside your home.
bulletHave your central-heating system serviced professionally before the start of each heating season.

bulletHave your chimney inspected and cleaned each year before the heating season. Fires in woodburning heating equipment are often caused by the buildup of creosote, which is a deposit of unburned fuel.
bulletIf you have a fireplace, use a screen to catch sparks. A metal screen or built-in glass door will keep sparks from flying into the room.
bulletKeep fireplace fires small and never burn trash or anything except wood in your fireplace.
bulletIf you have a wood stove, have it inspected professionally once a year and be sure it conforms to local installation codes.
bulletUse only cast-iron or steel wood-burning stoves that carry the label of an independent testing lab.
