Electrical Safety Tips Can Save Your Life

bulletUse extension cords only on a temporary basis.
bulletPut safety covers on unused receptacle outlets and extension cords.
bulletUnplug the appliance and call an electrician if the receptacle faceplate feels hot or if there is sparking, smoke or odor coming from the outlet, plug or appliance.
bulletExamine cords (appliances and extensions) regularly for signs of wear and tear or damage to the insulation.
bulletUnplug all nonessential electrical appliances when not in use.
bulletTest ground fault circuit interrupters periodically according to manufacturer's instructions to determine that they are working properly.
bulletUse only extension cords that have been listed by a registered certified organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL).

DON'Ts

bulletDon't attach extension cords to the wall with nails or staples and don't use extension cords that are worn or damaged.
bulletDon't put extension cords under rugs or rest anything on an extension cord.
bulletDon't overload cords with more than the proper electrical load.
bulletDon't touch any appliance that has emitted an electrical shock until the appliance has been unplugged.
bulletDon't place any appliance near water such as a sink or bathtub.
bulletDon't place an appliance cord so that it will come in contact with a hot surface.
bulletDon't leave any wiring exposed in outlets and switches. Obtain the correct size faceplate.
bulletDon't ignore switches or receptacle outlets that don't work. Obtain the help of a qualified electrician.
